Cross Country
On 18th Sept 2024 Chris set out to walk east to west across the UK, from Lowestoft, the most easterly population centre to the Pembroke Coast, the most westerly point. Completing 110 miles in the first 5 days , the last 51 of which was walked in 2 days, Chris developed serious blisters and had to abandon his crusade However he will return in Spring 2025 to complete the remaining 300 miles. During the first 5 days walking he shared short videos each day focusing on various issues related to rural UK, how it is broken and how, through greater vision, investment and commitment it might offer better value, better production and better opportunity. While the UK's landscape has seemingly sustained us for 2000 years, there have, particularly over the last 150 years , been periods when food production has been outsourced to other parts of the world. A planet threatened by the extreme effects of climate change will require the UK's unbuilt areas to be far more productive and far more multifunctional. With minimal influence in a world still dominated by the US politics and negligible ability to reduce global green house gas emissions, Britain must prepare itself to be able to withstand significant changes in weather and economic fortunes.

Reflections on the opening 100 miles, is the rural landscape only good for growing food or are we missing lost opportunities?
